These days, it seems you can’t turn on the TV, open a paper or walk down the street without learning of some catastrophic event wreaking havoc in our world. And if you’re anything like us, that news begins to wear on you. During times like these, when so much seems outside our control, my family seeks comfort in the idea that peace begins at home.
A little family togetherness at the end of a long day — simply enjoying one another’s company — truly makes a difference. And in an age when after-school activities and hefty workloads leave little room for “downtime,” it can be easier said than done. Here are a few ways we incorporate togetherness into our busy weeks.
Making Mealtime Memories
- Dinners around the family table offer a fantastic opportunity to catch up. Make it a point to gather together at least three times a week, and use these evenings to engage everyone. Ask questions, show support and gain a grasp on what’s going on in people’s busy lives. We love incorporating conversation starters. A couple of options available from Magpies, for instance, are drinking glasses decorated with fun questions, and “virtue cards” with kid-friendly explanations of concepts like “self-control” and “integrity.” Squeeze in extra quality time by asking loved ones to help prepare the meal and clean up afterward!
Factor in Time for Fun
- Family game night is an awesome chance to let loose and enjoy one another’s company. You’ve probably got a few old favorites stashed away in a closet, but consider stirring things up with a few new options. We stock some of our family’s favorites — Tenzi, puzzles and Left Center Right — at Magpies. Get your crew together and let the good times roll!
Get Out and Stretch Your Legs
- Indoor fun is great and all, but there’s something to be said for exploring the world around you. Why not set off on an adventure? Gather the family and traverse your neighborhood, or head to a park and see what there is to see. Make it a nature walk, gathering treasures like pinecones and locust shells along the way. Compare notes. Share stories. Enjoy being together. Remember, the reward is not in the destination, but the journey itself.
These might not be revolutionary ideas, but they sure can make a difference. You’re spreading some joy and sharing the love — and everyone is bound to benefit.
Until next time,
